I have a 1996 Merc 115/ single ram 3 wire T-N-T. Do I need to remove outboard to get to the back mounting screws when replacing tilt/trim? Thanks in advance.

Re: Tilt/ Trim Problem

No.

1. Tilt the outboard to the full tilt position and engage the tilt lock. Open the manual release 2 to 3 turns and loosen the fill plug to relieve pressure. Screw the manual release back in.

2. Disconnect the battery cables.

3. Disconnect the trim motor wiring from the motor and transom bracket. You may have to remove the starboard lower cowl to get the wiring free.

4. Using a diagonal cutters, pull the trilobe pin from the top swivel bracket. Drive the upper pivot shaft from the bracket.

5. Using a punch, drive the dowel pin securing the lower pivot shaft upward. Remove the lower pivot shaft from the trim/tilt unit and the stem brackets.

7. Free the trim motor ground strap by removing the anode at the bottom of the stern brackets.
