tilt / trim drifts down

The tilt/trim on my 1988 40hp Johnson drifts from full tilt up to full trim down in appx. 45 minutes. There are no oil leaks and the oil reservoir is full. It works fine with the power up and down switch but just won't hold in position. Any suggestions on what to check or replace first.

Welcome to iboats Ethan

SOmewhere on the bracket near the transom there will be a slot, in that slot is a screw. this is to lower it or raise it manualy. IF you loosen it you can lift the motor and it will fall back down unless you tighten it.
make sure it is tight.

Thanks hotrod007 for your reply. If you are referring to the manual release valve in the hydraulic motor pump, I have backed it out one turn and re-seated it. This did not solve my problem, tilt/trim still drifts down.

Do a search for "check valve" or maybe "tilt & trim check valve"
