Re: Tilt pump on an 888
Re: Tilt pump on an 888
I am now an expert on solenoids, at least starter vs tilt pump solenoids. They are virtually identical except for the internal wiring. A new trim pump solenoid even has the 'I' designation for the starter momentary 12v feed to the ignition system. However, for the trim solenoid that terminal is the field ground for the coil that actuates the armature that completes the circuit for the high amp transfer.
A starter solenoid takes it's field ground off of the mounting bracket of the solenoid. The trim pump solenoid is not mounted to the engine so the frame/mounting bracket ground would not work. Conversely, if you hooked your trim pump ground to the 'I' terminal of a starter solenoid, as Don indicated, when it was activated it would send 12v to where it does not want to go.
As mentioned before, I drilled the rivets holding my trim pump solenoid together. It did not look that bad so I cleaned the contacts, screwed it back together and re-tested it. It still clicked but did not pass juice to the other side. I then took some valve grinding compound, chucked the armature up in my drill and re- seated the armature to the field contacts. Voila! It now works. Methinks I will re-install it and see how it goes. I have a new $35 copy in the event it does not hold up.
Yeah, Yeah, I know. It was a lot of effort for little gain but then, I consider it to be education time. If I was ever in the field when a failure occurred, I would be the superstar to be able to get things running again.
