The tilt motor is not installed on my old motor. There is a pin that blocks the pitch of the motor with 5 different angles possible. I am sorry to ask such a dumb question, but is having trim control a big deal? (No dumb ?'s, just dumb people, right?)

no, not really. you get used to not having it. then when you get a motor that does, you never want to go back.

...but you will.

Not making a wise ***** comment, but did they even have power trim available in 1964 on an outboard?

My 1978 70HP Johnson uses good ole' armstrong tilt...

There was a power TILT unit, no trim while underway. I have one and will post part numbers.

EDIT: Power Tilt Kit, kit no. 382713, was sold as an "accessory" not an engine option.

I've done some research since reading the original post, from what I can figure out the "power tilt" is basically used when trailering the boat or at other times when it is necessary to raise it to avoid striking the LU...

It's not a finite "power trim" like what's used today to change the attitude of the boat once it's underway...

Too me, it's just cool that the even had that kind of stuff in the early 60's compared to how most automobile's where built back then (there were a few exceptions of cars with cool technology, but most were rude and crude)...

that would explain why it does not stay in a trim position but slowly lowers ,i thought i had a leak or something,so if i get it right i use it for raising motor for transportation or rock avoidance not for boat trimming?still usefull to have on the old girls for sure .

I would imagine if it bleeds down there is either air in the system or has a leaking / bypassing solenoid... Once up it should stay up until you drop it back down...

I love my old boat (1972) and older engine (1978), they are reliable and don't break the bank...

;)
