i have a 160hp mecrusier, we took it out yesterday, and it ran geat for 4hours with no problems, but when started towards the the boat ramp to load it up, it started stalling when we had it in neutral it started right up, but when we put it in gear it died. but would start right back up. just though it was weird because rode it for 4hours stop and go with no problems, just when we were putting it on the trailer. thanks for any help on this.

Re: help stalling!!!

Did it sound like the key was turned off? If so...your lower shift cable is probably bad. This causes the shift interupt switch to kill the engine.

It's hard to say When a Part will Go Bad,........

Whether it's run Well for 4 Hours, or 4 Years,.......
It Sounds like your Lower Shift Cable has Given Up the Ghost..........

It runs from the Shift Plate mounted somewhere on or near your motor to the Outdrive........
Hard to get to is a relative term,......
The Drive,+ Possibly the Gimbel Housing need to be Removed to Change it.......

That manual link that Haut posted if for 83 to 90 outdrives. Your 160 is an older Merc 1 drive. You will need service manual #1, it covers both engines and drives for you 67 to 69 engine and drive.
