This is more than likely a silly question for those experts out there, but for a novice like me, I am stumped.
I have a 76 Evinrude 115, and I also have a very bad back, tilting it up and down is killing me.
I keep finding OMC electric kits on eBay and other places but they are all for smaller engines.
I am not looking for tilt and trim, just a way to tilt her up and down that doesn't ruin my day at the lake with back pain.
I am a good do it yourselfer, so I don't think I will have a problem installing one, I just need someone to point me in the right direction.
Thanks to all who can help......... :D

Tried that, but the help was not worth the complaining........... my hair is getting blown and tangled.......... you are going too fast......... I hate the smell of 2 stroke exhaust........ blah, blah, blah!

Not really guys, she is actually a big help, but the 115 is just too heavy for her to help much..... ::cool:

There's a set of hydraulic cylinders on it that should make it pretty easy to tilt. I wonder of one or more are shot.

There are levers to hook to the cowling of the motor to help raise it but it might not work to well with the big motor that you have. You might find something at your local mirina but a tilt trim would be a very good investment. But at the same time as I seen how hard it was for my brother to find parts for his 75model 115hp evinrude tilt trim it would be hard to find parts if not harder to find a good deal on the whole tilt trim though.

The best bet is a CMC unit. It will give you both tilt and trim. It also gives a 6" set back for better performance. Used, they are in the $3-400.00 range.

They're available, here on iboats (new) at a great price. You need a PT-130 unit. The only issue is that you may also have to replace your steering cable because of length.

Personaly, I scrounged around and found a "tilt" unit on ebay. I knew what I was looking for and I would not recommend that unless you have time and can tinker..

The CMC will not disappoint.

for the 115 i would recommend the CMC system, this is the tilt assist mentioned above, but they are only for 40 hp and below, you could copy it, with heavier material,"http://www.eangler.com/product/366480622.htm". it move the center of gravity, to a different point, to assist in tilting the motor.

Re: Tilt Kit for 1976 Evin 115

Years ago OMC made a tilt/trim kit unit for this engine. 172859. Was for 70-135 hp. It mounted outside the transom brackets. Looked a little clumsy, but worked well. They are long since discontinued, but you see them advertised on EBAY every once in a while. They made them in two types, a tilt only and tilt/trim model. I'd opt for the tilt/trim model.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I am going to check out some local shops, and see what they might be able to add to the mix.

I still can't believe it's that heavy. I can lift my 85 of the same vintage easily with one-hand and off balance. I still say if it's that hard, your hydraulic dampeners need some looking at.

How can I verify that the dampners are working correctly.

Re: Tilt Kit for 1976 Evin 115

That's a real good question, one I've never needed to know the answer to. I'd give them a visual inspection for any fluid leaks for starters.

And, I'll take a boo in the service manual tonight to see what's what. I'd like to know the answer to that one myself.

Just so I can compare what you're going through. How hard is "hard".

The primary job of those dampeners is to stop the motor from slamming down. But there should be _some_ residual pressure left over to assist in raising the motor too. At least, that's what it feels like to me. Could be the seals are just shot.

I can say this, if I were to let it drop alone, I am pretty sure it would slam into the *** of the boat.
I know I have back problems, but I didn't think it should be this hard to lift, and lower.

Re: Tilt Kit for 1976 Evin 115

I stand by my theory of bad dampeners then. No way it should be coming down that hard.

Thinking about it now. They're probably more like a shock with a spring and some fluid than a real hydraulic rod. Never gave it much thought before, but that would make sense.

Anyone in the know?

Re: Tilt Kit for 1976 Evin 115

It would if it was for your year. The 77 and earlier units have the hydraulics on the outside of the transom mounts. Later they fit inside. In my opinion you're better off going with the CDC unit. IF you can find one for your year, you'll end up paying anywhere from $350-$500 depending on condition. You can get a good used CDC unit for that much, or new for a tiny bit more.

You know, between this motor issue and the bad carpeting, and faded paint, I am starting to think, this was not such a good idea for my first boat, maybe I should sell her and find something else for a hobby....... like whiskey maybe :D

Re: Tilt Kit for 1976 Evin 115

Even if that was a model for you, the motor is severely water damaged, Im sure needing a full rebuild, if it is good enough to even rebuild. A new motor for that alone will be another 200 on top of that price. Plus the time and labour to rebuild all the o rings and seals that have definately blown on that unit.

Re: Tilt Kit for 1976 Evin 115

Well I had a friend come over and help me this morning, and we tested the assist shocks, and if you let go even the tiniest bit in any position, the motor just falls.
So it looks like I need to replace/rebuild them at the very lest.
Anyone have advice on what to do from here?
