Hey, I have 1989 Mercury Blackmax 175. To my dislike the boat has been in the garage for about 8 months with no activity. I'm getting it out and everything works except for the tilt and trim. When I push the up or down button, I hear a clicking sound from the back of the motor. It appears to be to up and down relay? The motor is in the down position. Nothing is happening but the clicking, no motor running or nothing. What to do???

Cross one of the relays over and see if motor will try to engage.

With both suddenly failing, main suspect would be the ground return from the motor, (if it's 3 wire) or the motor itself.

The test starts by confirming power at the trim solenoids, and then jumping the big posts with a short piece of heavy wire.

hope it helps

Actually, the first part of troubleshooting this one would be, did it work fine the last time you had it out? It almost sounds like a low battery to me. Are you sure the battery has a full charge?
