tilt and trim switch

I have a 96 225 Merc. and I need to replace my t&t switch in my controls.I have a single Binical style shifter.I know the switch is bad(corroded broken wire).How do I get the handle off to be able to pull the wires out enough to solder a new switch on? I already have the old switch out hanging by the wires but not enough to solder new switch on.Tried to pull wires but they would not come out.

I found set screw in bottom of handle and got handle off.Still could not get wires out to put new switch on so I had to completely dissassemble the control to get to wires.All back in bussiness now.What a pain in the A!! though.
