Tilt and trim problems and questions

Sorry if this has already been posted somewhere. I am still new to the boating world just got my new motor put back in and now i wanna tackle the tilt and trim problems I had when I bought it. It will lower down with the button on the shifter but won't raise unless you lower it all the way down then the up switch will raise it an a couple inches then stop. Will only go all the way up with the trailer button.

That is correct.

That is the way it is supposed to work ( so you don't trim too high while running and damage the u joints in the drive). Run it all the way down, then up with the trim switch until it stops. Measure center to center on the cylinder bolts. Should be 21 3/4 inches for alpha 1, 20 3/4 inches for gen II. If you don't know what you have Alpha 1's are generally pre 1992.

Ok thanks for your help like I said I am still kinda new to boats. My dad has an older boat and it doesn't have the trailer button just up and down that is what was throwing me off I guess. Thanks agian
