Tilt and trim problem

I have a Johnson 70 horse model J70TLEND. Today the tilt would only go down, not up. When I push the button (on either the motor or the control head) there is no click or noise of any kind. Could this be a solonoid or a poor conection? I am not an engine mechanic. Any ideas on what t his could be? I need advise and a good book. Also, it would be nice to know what year this thing is if you can tell by the model number.

Thanks in advance.
Iggy

Re: Tilt and trim problem

That's a 1992 ya got there. Your problem is probably the tilt and trim selonoid. Look on the right(Port) side of the motor with the cover off for 2 small black boxes. Pull them straight out and switch them around. If it now goes up but not down, replace the bad selonoid. A factory Manual can be had at the link below. By the way, I have a 1991 70 HP, which is just like yours.

Manual

Thanks. I will look at those things. I am confused about which side of the motor to look on though. Is that the same side as the driver sits on? I always thought port was left. I am not sure...

Iggy

Sorry, It's late! You're right, port is left, starboard, right. Look on the right rear side of the motor.

Like here:

Thanks Rickdb1boat. I found the solonoids and switched them around. I have the same problem. I guess it is not the solonoid. Any other ideas?

Iggy

Does it make a noise when you hit the down button? All other electrical components working good? Power to everything else?

Yes, the motor runs and it moves down. NOw it is all the way down, however. I assume the same motor moves it up and down.

Yes, it is the same motor!
When you changed out the relay, did you try to see if it would power down? The only other thing I can think of right now is a wiring problem or defective switch(s). One may affect the other. One way or the other, you are not getting power to the "up" relay . Follow the wires from the engine button to the "UP" relay block. Look for a pinched or frayed wire along there and especially where the motor tilts at. If you can trace the wires down, you can check them with a meter to determine if you are getting power to the relay. Not as bad as it sounds! Just a little detective work.

Re: Tilt and trim problem

Thanks Rick. I found the problem. There was a wire connector that had viabrated out a bit. The connector was under one of the relays. I found it the hard way, by replacing both relays and the switch. The reason I replaced the switch was because it felt like it had a poor connection in one direction. The real reason for this was the backed out wire however. At any rate, it is fixed and I did it myself, thanks to you.

You have my gratitude,
Iggy
