1976 Johnson 135hp Seahorse...After 3 years of storage in the full upright postion. Installed a battery, tilt went down, would not go back up.
Lifted on the motor, it went back up. Lowered it one more time, quit working all together.
Solenoid working. Have voltage at the motor, but motor will not spin. First, if low on fluid will this keep the motor from working?
Second, After opening up the motor, there was what appeared to be a relay where the power comes in. It was crusted up, so I cleaned it, but do not know if I got the spacing back where it should be.

Re: Tilt and Trim not working question

Sokk..... That item within the PTT electric motor is not a relay. It is a circuit breaker designed to open if the electric motor overheats, has a short, whatever.

There should be NO gap. The circuit breaker points should be tightly closed.... open only when there is a problem and then, only momentarily.

Re: Tilt and Trim not working question

Joe, Thanks for the quick reply. I will open the motor back up and bend it so that there is contact. It does not seem like a very good contact point. There is no spring or anything to hold it snug against the other surface.
Maybe that's why it was working intermittently before!

Hi sokkernut....

The breaker points are make of bimetal which causes the points to part when over heated from high amp draw. A spring would impede this action and probably cause the motor to burn up if the points would not separate.
