So before I go reinventing the wheel..... I have several small 4-6 hp outboards that I frequently use on small Jon's or square stern canoes. Often the front of the motor is 2-3' behind me and the boat too narrow to move freely. Operating the tiller is no problem but I'd like to buy/make some linkage that would bring the gear shift lever within close reach. Any info/ thoughts appreciated.

3ft. piece of 1/4 inch threaded rod. Bend it 90 degrees at the end to go into shifter handle and put nut on inside. Use an I bolt or something of that nature on the side of the motor to keep rod pointed forward. Get a shift knob or just a little piece of pvc for the handle. Simple and cheap. Just did it.

If you havn't made the change yet just get the pvc (sch40) smaller dia than the shift lever, heat it in oven or heat gun and push onto lever it will conform to lever and won't need screws AND cost less
