Hi I am new to power boats after being a sailor for most of my life. The new to me boat I just picked up has a Lewmar pro fish 700 windlass. The anchor or chain are not tied to a cleat. Today at speed the anchor free fell from the boat causing me to panic and throw the engine in reverse damaging the lower end ;-(

In general do people tie off their anchor or chain to a cleat to stop this from happening?
Thanks

An unsecured/unstowed Anchor while underway, is not a good practice

I stow the anchor in the center compartment or under the seat stowage. Certainly not left where it can fall out or worse, injure someone

There is or should be a tie-off pin or clip to prevent the anchor from free falling. Lots of folks don't use it, but probably should. On a horizontal windlass, it is possible that the chain can bounce up out of the gypsy while underway.

Sorry to hear about your mishap.

On a larger scale, there was a big ship of some type up in the Great Lakes area that had an anchor drop and drag, and it caught some underwater cables and caused big $$$ damage. - It can happen to anybody. NTSB reports.

Too bad about the going to Rev thing. Did you just pass N accidentally?

Hi - to be honest I did not even think about the consequences of throwing an engine into R directly from F - clearly not something I would do in a car, not my finest moment.
