Re: Thunderbolt 500 problems

Did you try a search on that topic? If you don't find it someone will be glad to help. I don't have the time right now. (Wife sending me off!)
If you have no luck here try. WWW.outboardparts.com
And look under troubleshooting.
Best of Luck ,Tim

Re: Thunderbolt 500 problems

Thats a driver ign, Mercurys first AC selfcontained CD ign. system. Do not hook any connection to 12v. First disconnect the orange wire and ck for spark, the switch box really can not be cked even with a DVA so you must ck it for input and output the red wire (low speed winding) at the switch box should read 180V+ with a DVA or test 400 OHMs disconnected, the blue wire (high speed winding) should be 20V+ with a DVA or 10 OHMs disconnected, the white wire is a bond wire and should not be grounded and the green wire should put out 150V+

Thanks for the comments...By the orange wire you do mean the spark plug wire? Also I have checked the ohms and all checks out well.I have been told the swt.box must "cLick" I haven't heard the"click" but I am getting AC voltage to the green wire.I have no spark to the plugs..

Re: Thunderbolt 500 problems

before 1976 you have to have battery at 12v or more to get spark my 1972 80 will not start if battery is not up,if dist on it that, give's fact of power needed, problem might be pickup in dist.

Re: Thunderbolt 500 problems

gatorred, this is not the same type of system as your 80hp ign. this system is not dependant on battery voltage, eufaulaokie the orange wire I was refering to is on the switch box it is the ground off wire from the ign. switch--Bob

Re: Thunderbolt 500 problems

gatorred, your 68, 500 used battery CD that the changed in 69 or 70 to driver ign. in fact I think your 80 and the 68, 500 use the same switch box. About the only thing that will cause a engine to run backward is that timing is not right
eufaulokie, sorry not trying to high jack your thread
