Thrust washer wont fit

So had to put a new (used) lower unit on my 86 johnson gt150.
I got a used lower unit off ebay. It's from a 87 johnson 175. The compatibility chart says it should work fine.

Boat came with a stainless prop not sure brand or anything or if it even mattters.

But my old thrust washer will not fit on the new lower unit. There's about 1/4" of space left when it is slid on. No amount of cleaning will allow it to slid on anymore. It would need to be press fitted on to go the rest of the way.

How do I figure out what washer I need? First time boat owner here so I know basically nothing.

Ok so I have noticed a few differences in the lower unit. The shaft on the new (used) one sticks out a little farther. So it appears the washer does go on just as far as it did with the old shaft. Not letting me upload pics or I would show. But there is still a gap between thrust washer and hub when I put it on. Not sure if that is OK or not?

the washer should not be all the way against the bearing housing. your old prop shaft must have slid inward a little when the gears crashed if it was hitting the bearing carrier housing.

Yep that's what I have come to the conclusion of! The old thrust washer that was on it was improper for the prop. Did not have the centering ring on it. I believe this caused the prop to move around and destroy the forward gear and push the shaft in. New unit seems in much better condition. And looks good with the correct thrust washer installed. Thanks!

if you have any issues adjusting the shifter cable be sure to post a thread, If I cant help you out someone in here will I am sure. I did not move the shift shaft so hopefully it was still at the correct height. you have a little room for play in the adjustment on the cable but not much.

Well the manual just said leave shift shaft in reverse and put it back in. So what is the correct way to do it? I don't see how setting it at a certain hight would do anything. Once it's up and you bolt it back on its gonna be where is gonna be. It seems to shift into forward/reverse fine out of water. Guess I will see when I get it in water.

the shift rod is threaded in so when you turn it clockwise it gets shorter and counter clock wise to lengthen. shift rod height should be set in the neutral position. measurements are in the secret files section at the top of this section. If it is out much you will not have enough adjustment to compensate with your shift cable. But hopefully you are ok.
