Thru Hull valve repair or replace

So one of the other items needing repair on our 90 Sundancer, besides the VacuFlush, see thread below, is the AC system. I was told by the PO it did not seem to blow cold. The first thing I noticed was the hose from the thru hull valve to the strainer look to be in sink your boat condition. I so I bought 2 ft of correct wire wound very expensive hose to replace it. After all was connected I found the Groco SV valve as pictured stuck in the closed position regardless of the levers position. Also in the photo you can see my hose fitting connected to city water to test the system. I was very please that the AC was working and it took about a half hour for the cabin to cool off, it was about 85 degree out and sunny. This mean I need to repair/replace valve.


I know the valve is serviceable but the parts are NLA and do not seem to exist. If I can not service this valve, how do I replace it? There looks to be 2 large sheet metal screws holding the valve to a glassed in base, once the screws are removed does the valve just unscrew? I am assuming the bolts to the left are holding the bronze thru hull stainer. Then I can then replace with a new Groco valve like below.

3M 5200 on the base then screw back down on to the bronze thru hull, and finally 3 screws to existing base. Obviously this work will not take place until the boat is on the hard for winter. I am hoping I can do this with out removing the port engine outer exhaust manifold that I just put on last spring!! As with everything in the bilge of this boat its tough to reach. Any advice on this is greatly appreciated. Mike

You have nothing to loose by tearing it apart to see why it’s not working.
Could be a simple fix.

Having said that..I’d change it out for an updated valve if it isn’t a pain to do.

Mine would be a royal pain.
The strainer is screwed into the bottom port then the seacock thru-bolted to the hull

Since sinking my boat is not what I want to do I will wait until she is out of the water before I start messing with it. I was thinking that I could possibly take it apart and reassemble with it the stuck open position then ad another ball valve. However the last thing I want to do I mess with it them have it leak in the spring when it is launched. I am pretty sure that I will be replacing it with a modern ball valve before spring launch. Unless someone knows where I can get replacement part SV-756 (part #4) I will just repair the existing valve. My guess is the shaft in no longer attached to the rubber.

I would go with a marlon thru-hull vs a bronze.
