I have a 15.5 ft Lowe aluminum bass style boat with a sterm mount transducer. I have been thinking about getting a new fish-finder. The current one is a little on the wimpy side and at higher speeds, it drops out. Will a thru-hull mounted transducer work on this type of boat or are they primarily for fiberglass transducers?

It's not unusual for a transom mount transducer to encounter water turbulence at high speeds and lose proper function. You might want to just accept that, or try relocating the transducer to find a better mounting position. A thru-hull mount is certainly possible. With an aluminum boat, you must use a plastic or stainless steel version to avoid problems that occur with brass and aluminum. Here's a good option for you in a thru-hull tri-ducer that fits Raymarine, Garmin and Furuno fishfinders.
