Throttle - Reverse Gate Interaction

Hi,

I have a 1996 Bayliner Jazz with a SportJet 120XR. I just replaced the rev limiter, and the boat ran great, but not at quite the top speed I had last year (25mph instead of 35mph).

I noticed that the reverse gate was blocking the nozzle a bit when I had it shifted to WOT. I adjusted the reverse gate, and was able to get 31mph. It seemed to help a little.

Then, all of a sudden, my boat would not idle correctly (600 RPM instead of 1100, missing, sputtering). I think it's just a coincidence that this happened right after my reverse gate adjustment, as the set screw for idle still seems to perform the same as before (ie. it is touching the block when the shifter is in an "idle" state).

Am I missing something? Could I have screwed up my idle by adjusting the reverse gate? They seem to be pretty independent, although controlled by the same lever.

Thanks for any help. I am ready to leave the boat out in the middle of the lake with the key and swim home.

I've adjusted that reverse gate to no affect of the idle before, so I'm of the opinion that it's a coincidence. When's the last time the carbs were cleaned?

BTW, Dan, you'll get a lot better response from the "Jet Motor/PWC" forum on these. Technically, the 120 Sport Jet is a Force 120.

Emoney,

Thanks for the reply. I will try the other forum. I took the carbs off and cleaned them with no change. Disabled the rev limiter, as it was my last problem and I read that it could cause "dropped cylinders at low speeds", with no change. Changed plugs - no change. Becoming very frustrated as a new boat owner - nothing but trouble.

ok so I had my dad make me some of these bushings in the machine shop at his work. and put it all back together. Worked great all summer until today I noticed I lost a pivot bolt and a bushing, except this time when I tried to make it back to the dock I lost the reverse gate and the end of the cable or linkage along with it. I found the reverse gate online but that thing was like 300 bucks!
So im thihking I just don't have reverse any longer ever? Will this hurt the boat besides losing my maneuvering ,anybody else done this with another boat that had a 120xr sportjet?
