Throttle Issues

I am new to this site and I certainly appreciate any help someone can throw my way. I've got a 99' Evinrude 115 Ocean Pro. I'm finding that my throttle is harder to move into the forward and reverse gears. A few times it will go into the forward position, but the drive didn't engage. Some times you can hear it click click click click before it grabs the gear. That doesn't sound good when it happens. I'm fairly mechanically inclined and I do have the manual for the motor, but am I getting in over my head? Does this sound like a throttle adjustment and is that something a novice can properly accomplish. By the way, what would be a fair price for a throttle adj? That is, hoping those gears are still doing fine. Thanks in advance.

Re: Throttle Issues

I dont know what to do with the throttle.I do know you have to stop that click click That is the clutch dog not engaging the gear fully It WILL Ruin your gears fairly quickly and its a expensive fix!!
Just stop and wait for someone to help with your adjustment.

Re: Throttle Issues

If you know which end of a screwdriver to hold you can easily determine whether shift ROD adjustment is required or whether shift CABLE adjustment is required. Remove the cowl. Then disconnect the shift cable from its attachment on the engine. If you are lost at this point STOP as you are in over your head.

Want to continue?? Notice where the shift cable attached? That's the shift linkage. Have someone start the engine and then YOU move the shift lever on the engine. DO NOT be a wus when you do this. Move the darned lever to avoid the clicking. Try forward and reverse. If the shifter pops into foward, back to neutral and reverse with a distinct detent the shift rod does not need adjusting but the cable apparently does. If the shift cable does need adjusting, NOW you may be in over your head and I suggest (strongly) you obtain a service manual for the your specific engine.

Stop the engine. Control in neutral and engine in neutral. Bring the cable end up to its attachment point. Does the cable and shift linkage line up exactly WITHOUT pulling or pushing on anything?? Yes - connect the cable. No - adjust the trunion until it does. Then attach the cable. The trunion is the notched wheel.

Did you mean to say that if the ROD needs adjustment then refer to a manual?

I think you are running in salt water. If so then suspect the cables or the remote control. Simple check, disconnect the cables at the motor and test the action.
Your statement that it is increasingly harder to move the control seems to point to cables and control.

Yup -- I screwed up. If you can't shift if manually on the engine the shift rod needs adjusting. I'll take 30 lashes with a wet noodle. It may also be that something is amiss in the lower unit but adjust the rod first.

Thanks SilverTip, I thought that's what you meant & wasn't trying to nitpick. Just making sure because I just changed my water pump and upon reassembly I have that clicking when shifting into gear. Everything was fine before and I moved the nut to make it easier to put back together, so I'm sure it just needs adjusted.
