'79 'rude 70hp, running good but throttle slowly backs off of WOT unless I hold it down. The other day while cruising at WOT I turned the friction adj knob about 1/8 to the right and she died, just like if I turned off the key. I reset the friction knob & she started back up & runs ok since but I have a nagging feeling that I'm not going as fast as before. Could be my imagination, I have no tach or speedometer.

1. It still won't stay at WOT on its own - is that by design?
2. Is it possible the throttle cable slipped a tiny bit? I have the manual but having trouble understanding how to tell whether she's opening up all the way.
3. Any idea of how I killed the engine with the friction adj knob?

thanks for the help,
jtw

Re: Throttle friction adjustment

The friction adjustment, regardless of the type of control box, is nothing more than a brake pad type device pressing against the throttle cam.

If the engine cuts off (dies) when you attempt to increase the pressure, I'd suggest that you dismantle that control box to inspect that area.

According to your explanation, it would appear that increasing the pressure of the friction adustment is causing the ignition to short out.
