I'm trying to replace the upright one. I tried pressing it out but there's just not much room to work in. Thanks for replying.
First you have to remove the horizontal gear/shaft assembly. Remove the screw from the beveled pinion gear and slide the shaft forward and out. Usually, there is enough clearance for it to come out past the raised tiller handle gear. Note I said usually.
Once that is out of the way, remove the upright shaft. Then the gear should be able to come up and out. If it is tight, use a hammer and wooden dowel to bump it out. Then press the bushing out if need be. There usually is a bunch of corrosion around the outside of the bushing, which makes removal difficult. Be sure to scrape all that corrosion out before reassembling. And grease everything with some good waterproof marine grease.
