Throttle Arm Moves By Itself

Hi all,

I have a 2013 25ft Xcusrion pntoon with a 150 Merc 4-stroke (sorry, can't remember which one). I did not notice it last season, but this year, when running at any speed over 3200 rpm's, the throttle arm moves back and settles back and holds around the 3200 mark. I have to hold the arm in place to maintain speed. Contacted the dealer who contacted Mercury. Merc claims everything is set to spec. Other pontoon owners have also complained. Dealer can "tighten" the controls.

Ours does the same thing. I called Merc. service and they said it was supposed to be like that?

There is a friction adjustment on the throttle control housing...somewhere. It is usually a flat head screw with a locknut. They used to be very easily accessible and noticeable but now manufacturers like to hide them either under the housing cover or under the console where the control housing mounts (some new Mercs). All it does is tighten up the throttle lever so it doesn't move by itself. Easy, once you find it.

HarborRat is exactly right. Mine does the same thing, my dealer will adjust mine when I take it in for it's 10 hour service.

The throttle tension nut is located near the bottom of the control and is accessed from inside the console. In other words, you have to reach up into the console from below and adjust the nut on the control to increase or decrease the tension. I believe it is a 5/16 nut that is adjusted. I got to mine through the side door on the console. Being a contortionist helps reach it..Smile :)

Mine also would return to about the half throttle. Not sure about other models but I have the 8M0041431 and the friction adjust nut is just below the throttle lever. You can see in in this pic (grabbed from the web). Mine was so loose it wiggled by hand very easily. I tightened it just enough to not move freely and now the throttle doesn't return on its own. I had enough slack in the cables and wires I was able to pulled it up out of the console several inches after removing the four mounting screws.

Does anyone see the pic because I do. If no, I'm not sure what I can do differently.

Nope no pic, post it to flickr or some site like that, imageshack maybe, and then link it to here.. This forum has been fubar for me ever since they had the upgrade issues. I get errors on every post I make, and pics do not show up for me.
