Thoughts on Home depot resin and glass, by bondo?

Was going to throw on a few layers of this since I know nothing about glassing, or where else to get it besides lowes/depot. Hoping it's decently strong, and not sure how many layers on the transom to help out. Can I just keep adding layer after layer, or is there a point to which it's reached it's maximum strength?

its a waxed resin, so you have to do it in one shot. its also more expensive than epoxy from most supply houses.

definitely tell us what your working on, and read the stickies

if your transom is moving, there is wood issues below the fiberglass that will need to be repaired first.

The Bondo brand of resin I got from Homedepot is unwaxed!

At $35.00 a gal its not a bad price either! seems a little bit thicker than other resins but still works fine!

What are you going to use for glass, mat and cloth? You need mat and cloth with poly resin since poly resin is very weak and brittle by itself. Buying fiberglass supplies at Home Depot/Lowes will put you in the poor house if doing a large project, so it's best to buy from an online supplier like US Composites.

Help out, what? As Scott said, putting fiberglass (or even epoxy) over a rotten transom will not fix it, it will still be weak. You need to replace the rotted plywood, gut the transom and fiberglass in the new plywood.

I got the mat. Is the woven one stronger? And what do you mean by wax, and one shot? It's just the little kit that comes with the hardener, and I bought the mat. It's all they have for fiberglass there, or lowes. It's about 2 1/2 to 3 square feet I need to glass. Prepping it right now. Sanding, etc.

Uhhmm..this is incorrect. ALL Bondo brand resin sold at HomeDepot is Waxed!!! It may not say so on the can, but...If you call 3M they will inform you that it is.

To the OP, Having read your other thread concerning your boat/Transom, Using this resin to overlay an already wet and rotting transom will not fix your problem. You'll just be wasting your time and money.

Never mind. I read up somewhere else, it's most likely a waxed resin. They also said even though it's waxed, you can just sand it and apply more layers. More of a pain, but it's what I've got.

I knew the boat was familiar. if this is to fix your two transom cracks, as Woodonglass pointed out. It will NOT work unless you remove the rotten and cracked wood first, replace that, and then re glass.

in your past posts, the transom well will need to be removed and rebuilt. to access the transom unless you uncap the hull.
