I read something about this a few weeks ago but forgot about it. Now there's more coverage. I make the vice admiral's lunch every day because I don't want her eating the garbage they feed them in the cafeteria. It's really quite appalling. I go eat with her occasionally and am always infuriated when I see the trays of the kids who have to eat the school food. They cut way back on their recesses and feed them disgusting slop that can't possibly meet even the most rudimentary nutritional guidelines then wonder why they can't pay attention in class and struggle with obesity. I know nothing is ever as simple as it seems, but I also know when I was in school lunch was something to look forward to, not something to dread.

Very interesting!
There was something about the caters and the food that was being served in some north american schools not meeting heath guidelines, basically they low balled the bid and served tripe du jour, smothered in a sauce to make it pallitable.
No veggies, nothing nutritious.
(mindya we never had cafeteria food, just brown bagged it with mostly PB amd J, or tuna salad sandwich ETC)

Could you be more specific, Incoop? That is a pretty harsh accusation.

Yes sir. Chicken Rings, whatever those are. They look like skinny onion rings but are purportedly made of chicken. Steak Fingers; uniformly shaped gray pieces of what I can only assume is supposed to approximate chicken fried steak suited to eating with one's hands. Corn; lots and lots of corn, but rarely anything green unless one counts the pickle slices that come with the "hamburgers". These are only the examples I've personally witnessed. The few times Gracie has eaten the food it's made her sick. The crazy thing is, the school has a full kitchen that's well equipped to provide a quality product. As I mentioned earlier, the situtation is surely more complex than it appears to be. I know there are budget constraints, and I know they could throw all the veggies I wanted them to at the kids and some of them would simply end up in the trash (the veggies, not the kids), but many of these kids don't eat except at school. There has to be a better way.

I haven't read her Blog, but with a screename like "Veg" should I draw any conclusions as to what she prefers?

The only thing I remember being tasty in school were the sweet rolls and yeast rolls. But that was 25+ years ago. I do remember that icecream scoop of tuna salad on a lettuce leaf. YUK!

Went to a small school less than 400 K to 12. They had cooks and most meals were ok some were great.

Interesting story. Rather refreshing to see that kind of effort from someone so young.

Veritas Ex Gustu
Ahhhh . . . V.E.G. got it. It's like confusing my handle with Quality Control. Exactly the same, only different, add in utterly absurd

I loved the one woman's response from MN in particular, "There is only one motivation for this decision; self-preservation." Ain't it the truth.
