Hi All,
I live and hunt/fish in Maryland.
I have a A. Broadbill duck boat that I and a friend rebuild 4 years ago...
The 25 Johnson/Evinrude 1996?
That thing is driving me nuts. It is real hard to start  . Then for some reason at full throttle, we are going just fine, then the power cuts in 1/2 ... It slows down to barely on plain  ..... What do I do???? Other then turn it into a rain gauge....

So what have you done so far to isolate the problem? What is its service history been such as carb rebuilds, plug changes, compression and spark checks. Make sure the vent is open on the gas tank. Is the primer bulb being sucked flat? When the engine slows down does it have good spark on both cylinders? Is it overheating? When was the water pump changed last. Is the thermostat working properly? Any of these situations can cause the engine to lose power. Lose one cylinder you lose half the power.

Welcome to iBoats, John.

Lots of people here can help. Like Upinsmoke said, a bit more info on your maintenance would help. But check out his suggestions and post back.

Changed spark plugs.... No service history at all..... The only outboard motor guy around here will try to rip you off big time....

Make sure the vent is open on the gas tank.. Yes.

Is the primer bulb being sucked flat? No...

When the engine slows down does it have good spark on both cylinders?...
Yes, I think so,not sure.... The motor just bogs down...

Is it overheating?
Don't think so. It is still leaking from the side...

When was the water pump changed last?
Not a clue.. I got the motor used...

Is the thermostat working properly?
Again, Not a clue... How do I check..

WOW John....you have some territory to cover.

First....a service manual would be a great help. Usually, OEM's are preferred but some can get along with the generics.....Clymers or Seloc.

Get some basic tests' on the engine....these would be compression and spark test. Any compression above 90psi is great but what's more important is that the cylinders are within 10 to 15% of each other. Spark should jump at least a 7/16" gap with a hot lighting like spark.

Next, get a temp on the engine. You can do this on muff's in the drive way. Start the engine and let it idle for a while. Large square area on top of the engine just forward of the head, you should be able to set your fingers there for several seconds before pulling them back. This indicates a temp of around 140 to 143*....that's good.

If it just stays cold, t-stat is stuck open or not there. Which brings us to the water pump impeller. If you have no ID when it was last changed.....do it now.

If you ain't sure when the carb was overhauled last.....do it now. Check your fuel lines and replace any that have become hard. These can lose their grip at connection points and such air.

A little test to do next time your in the water, when the engine cuts way down like you posted....pull the plug wires one at a time. If the engine quits, chances are your dropping a cylinder spark. If pulling either plug wire doesn't do much except make it run worse....look else where for the problem.

John - Your best bet is to start by purchasing a shop manual and getting farmiliar with the basics of what makes these things tick. If you don't want to buy one hit your library. You need to do some basic troubleshooting. For example if you don't know if the engine is producing spark then you need to find out. Same thing with the other items in your last post.

Remember we can't see your motor and we can't turn the wrenches for you.

Having said that one of the items that I would recommend that you do is rebuild the carb. That is based on the very limited info that you gave us.

 How do I tell how old it is? The guy at the place that I got it from said it's made in the 90s...

Re: This is my 1st post here.

By the model number John. You can get it from the tag on the port side transom bracket. It'll give you the Model and Serial number. Just post the model number and we can show you how it's done.

EDIT: Let's say (just for example) the model number is E25REDA

"E" - Means Evinrude

"25" - Horse Power

"R" - Means Rope start

"ED" - gives Year

"A" - Means model run which doesn't mean much to us.

Here's how the year is figured

I N T R O D U C E S
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0

E = 9
D = 6

Year is 1996

If you don't know how to troubleshoot you have two choices 1) obtain a service manual as suggested, or 2) let a pro diagnose the problem. Although you are unlikely to find a factory service manual at your public library, there is a good chance they have a couple of after-market manuals (Clymer or Seloc) that have troubleshooting information in them. The engine needs air, fuel, and spark to run. And everything needs to happen at the proper time. I too suspect you are losing spark on one cylinder as the engine warms up. That would indicate an intermittent power pack. You need to get the engine to fail and then check for spark.
