A 38-year-old motorist was killed when his car was struck by part of an axle that came loose from a tractor-trailer truck in Pasadena today.

The incident happened a few minutes after 8 a.m. on Texas 225 near Richey, said Pasadena police spokesman Vance Mitchell.

Mitchell said the truck, owned by Houston Distributing Co. was heading west when a portion of the rear axle assembly broke loose.

The axle hit the center rail and then bounced into the eastbound lanes where it hit a 1996 Nissan. The impact killed the driver of the Nissan. His name was being wittheld pending notification of family.

Traffic on the eastbound lanes was tied up for about three hours.

Mitchell said any criminal charges are pending the results of the investigation.

I too have a 1997 Nissan Pathfinder.:^ but only wish I was 35.

Hopefully the family will be compensated well for their terrible loss.

Use to work off hwy 225 building the Shell plant as a boilermaker back in my Root and Scoot days. After that job was complete I worked at the second phase of the Exxon plant in Baytown.

In Toronto recently, truck rims and tires falling off the rigs on the freeways have been quite the killers. They stepped up maintenance checks and enforcement to try and get it under control.

In northern Ontario, It used to be 50 ton steel coils falling off trucks and rolling down the road that were a bit of a concern. They finally had to legislate the necessity to use 4 chains to tie them down, instead of 3.

A few years back, I went by a minivan that was crushed by one of these 50 ton coils. It makes a mess

I think axles should be banned. No, wait, coils. Upon second and third thought, all trucks are evil.
