It felt like I hit something a few times but I didn't hit anything.

doubt you would hit the same submerged something a minute later, so yes probably gears and such. How long did you keep running afterwards to get back to ramp/dock and at what speed?

It felt like my prop hit something but I was in 17 feet of water. A minute later, it felt like I hit something again, still 17 feet deep.

Years ago I was 30 miles offshore in 300+ feet of water and I hit a ladder. One of those old school wooden ladders with steel reinforcement rods. It was floating about a foot beneath the surface. Here I am, the only boat in what was probably 200+ square miles of ocean, and I hit an effen ladder. The only reason I knew what it was is because we had to dive in and pull it off the the props.

Where were you when you hit whatever it was. You mentioned locking thru the Mississippi... if you were on that a river, there could be all sorts of submerged stuff you might hit... I was out last week and there were lots of branches (and what looked to be large logs or entire trees) in Pool 19. After a few days, those can take on enough water to float below the surface... would be easy to hit something like that.

Again, if you're on the Mississippi (or similar river) another thought would be wing dams, although you should be OK in 17' of water.

lowerunit2.jpg Oil in the water pick up pump. That leads me to believe there is a problem in the drive shaft housing.

When I felt it jolt the second time I shut it off. I paddled to the boat ramp. 19 ft. cuddy cabin.

The boat is a 1986,19 foot Citation cuddy cabin. It has a 3 liter GM 4cyl engine. This happened a few weeks ago. I have sunk so much money in this boat. I don't want to sink anymore in it.
I found a much nicer boat on Craigs list. It's a 1991 Thundercraft / Playtime. 19 foot cuddy. It's in showroom condition. I had it out 3 times, it's shiny and gets looks.

What was on the magnet when you drained out the gear oil? Looks like the driveshaft seal is bad.

Was the little oil galley o ring still there when you pulled the LU?

There were some fine shavings on the magnet. Is there supposed to be an o-ring on that screw?
When I took out the screw, clear water came out, then about a quart of gear case oil. The oil was not foamy. It was still kind of bluish. It wasn't that old. I changed it last spring. I have dug my way into Mercruiser lower units a few times.

Ayuh,.... Combined with the Thumpin' ya heard, as if hittin' something, I kinda doubt yer drive is gonna hold up, without a Complete tear-down, 'n rebuild,....

If I'm right, a brand new SEI aftermarket drive, from here at iboats, is Cheaper,...

Thanks for your information FunTimes.
I bought this boat 4 years ago. It was not very well taken care of. When I bought it, all the bellows were rotted out and the prop had 1 blade completely broken off. The skeg is pretty rough, but I don't see any JB Weld on it. And the paint no longer shines. The EZ loader trailer needed a new tongue. The guy wanted $1,000 for it. I offered $400 and he said ok. I put a lot of time and money into it and enjoyed it for the past 4 seasons. The day after it made that thunking noise, I found a much nicer boat on Craigs List.

IDK Bondo. I have a new boat and I'm not going to put anymore money in this one. It wasn't that nice when I bought it. But I dumped a few thousand into it and enjoyed it for the past 5 years. The 3 liter GM engine is in very good condition. New seats, new bimini top. I just had the EZ loader trailer sand blasted and repainted black. I'm at a dilemma. If I part it out, what do I do with the hull?
