It wasn't part of the original 13 colonies (pretty much the whole east coast), and since it marked the beginning of surveying of the territory that came to include IN, MI, IL, MN, WI, it still gets included with them. It also has to do with the fact that the midwest symbolizes agriculture (the bread basket). Well, a lot of Ohio is agricultural, especially western Ohio. Really everything between the Appalachians & Rockies could be called midwest.
The actual geographic center of the country is in Kansas.
And GQ, I have to disagree with your number of divisions. There are a lot more that 3. Cause by your catagories, MS, AL, TN, KY are midwest, and if you said that to residents of those states, I think they'd say you were crazy.
Tilliam, I concur. You are correct.

In 1787 Ohio was part of the Northwest territory. ??????? How do they get mid-west out of that? It should be north-west instead. That is if the explanations above reflect that it was called mid-west due to history. I can understand why some school kids get confused.

To me if you were from another country. Then heard of a mid-west state that you wanted to find on the globe. Where area would you look at on a map to find it?

Don't forget - the original NEW ENGLAND was just north of SAN FRANCISCO - circa 1580...

They made it to Kansas in colonial days??
Oh you meant Pittsburgh , as in Pennsylvania. ;) :p

As soon as the Louisiana Purchase was made (1803) the northwest Territory stopped being the "west" or the north west of this country, and in fact, was the "midwest". The name stuck. Regardless of how much more territory we acquired west of the Louisiana Purchase.

Very good point SS. I would look at the Mississippi River, and look at the states on either side of it. Maybe only look at the states to the west of it! Not Ohio, but hey Ohio is the midwest anyway!
