In this state, the news media calls Ohio the mid-west. Geographically, it is closer to the east coast than the west. So why do they call Ohio in the mid-west? Anyone?

Ohio is in the east, period. The media uses relative terms that were derived early in our history when the far west was the Mississippi River. ;)

Our country is divided into three section. West coast, Mid-West, and East coast. The middle section "Mid-West" has the least population so to compensate, covers a larger area including Ohio. Geographic location has no relevent in this case.

Re: This Baffles me?

Ohio is called midwest, because it has always been called midwest. It wasn't part of the original 13 colonies (pretty much the whole east coast), and since it marked the beginning of surveying of the territory that came to include IN, MI, IL, MN, WI, it still gets included with them. It also has to do with the fact that the midwest symbolizes agriculture (the bread basket). Well, a lot of Ohio is agricultural, especially western Ohio. Really everything between the Appalachians & Rockies could be called midwest.
The actual geographic center of the country is in Kansas.
And GQ, I have to disagree with your number of divisions. There are a lot more that 3. Cause by your catagories, MS, AL, TN, KY are midwest, and if you said that to residents of those states, I think they'd say you were crazy.

Thanks shipmates,

So actually there is no mid-eastern states. It is just odd that terms used back then are still used in some instances while others have been changed to follow with current times/events.

I guess it is a good thing that there is only one mid-east anyway.

everything originates from the NE. right coast, wrong coast, etc. isn't the middle of the country just used for storage of nuclear waste?
