Thinking bout a new boat

I've got my eye on an 83 bayliner capri cuddy cabin with a 4cyl volvo penta (fresh water cooled I/O).

Dirt cheap on the price and the trailer alone is probably worth what he is asking. Anybody have an idea on a ballpark figure for a complete engine rebuild on this 3.0L 4cyl? All of my former boats have been outboards and this would be my first I/O......The outdrive was recently done, but the heads are currently off the engine and the owner said he "hasn't had the time to re-install them" Just thinking about the extreme fix and potential cost of a complete engine overhaul.

You looked in his eyes, do you think he's honest, install the head and try to start it.

Head and manifold and riser separated?

Good motor, and drive none better.

The gaskets in the boat?

Well, it's not the 3.0L Chevy engine everyone here thinks it is. It's a Volvo 4 cylinder with a timing belt.
Parts are very expensive for that engine. I would be looking at the port on the cylinder head where the exhaust manifold bolts on. It better look like the other 3 and not corroded away.
What about that exhaust manifold, it usually causes heads to be removed.

The outdrive was recently done, but the heads are currently off the engine and the owner said he "hasn't had the time to re-install them"
There is only one head for that engine, what's this "heads are currently off" and "hasn't had the time to re-install them"

I would be very worried about the cost of repair if the boat was free.

I agree with Don.
This is not an uncommon occurance.
I can't tell you how many boats I've looked at in the past that only needed a little something or other on the surface only to find out it was really a can of worms.

All responses noted and appreciated. Saw the boat yesterday and it's a wreck. Hull is in good shape but the boat was rode hard and put away wet......I don't mind a little needed work but this looks one looks like a bank account drainer. thanks all.

Don't mean to be nosy, but where are you from?

I haven't heard that for years. :D When I say it people generally just look at me with a blank face, as if to say ...

... hu?
