Re: thinking about trading my Honda 4S for a Yam 2S

DU601,

My Arima was a Sea Explorer, cuddy. And I did have the Doelfin on her, along with wedges between the motor and transom to get get the Honda tucked way in.

When I bought mine, they were rated for a max 75HP. I'm guessing that's because they were 'advertising' her under 16'. When they started calling her a 16, then the HP went up to 100. I asked, and Arima sent me a new sticker with the higher HP rating. Great little boat, and good support from Arima...I've since moved up to an 18 foot Seaswirl w/ 115 Ficht.

Any 2 stroke will be major adjustments from the Honda, maybe more aggrivation than lack of power...a stinky, gas guzzling 2 stroke noise maker even with a lot of pep might could easily get under the skin of a boater who's used to a Honda.

Yes, it would be hard to go from a smooth running Honda 4 to a C70 2....no doubt there.

Ditto on Arima's service. A-1. I forgot they made the same 16 in a cuddy too. Amazingly its only 50 lbs heavier than the Chaser. The only, and I mean only, negative about the boat is the cosmetic gell coat cracking on the interior f-glass. She's a great troller. I run a 6 hp 4-stroke on the back too. :)

Re: thinking about trading my Honda 4S for a Yam 2S

I wanted to give an update and thank those of you who offered your advice. I purchased a new 70 HP Yamaha 2 stroke for my above boat. Now, after the break in period, it has become clear that by going up in HP and switching to a 2 stroke engine, I have solved my hole shot and power struggle for this boat in rough water. Granted I will never know if I would have solved it by going to a bigger 4 stroke, but for now I am satisfied with my boat's performance with a heavy duck hunting load. The boat "leaps" out of the water and I travel very nicely at about 2/3 throttle. I only increased the engine weight by 18 pounds over the 50 Honda but gained an extra 20 HP. The Yam is also quite smooth and quiet, much more so than I had anticipated. But it is still no Honda (especially at idle), and it does smoke. But for now, I can live with that. Thanks again.

Wish I'd run into you when I wanted to trade my Yamaha 70 for a Honda 50! You'll find as I did that a Yamaha two stroke is nearly as satisfying a motor as is a Honda four stroke.
