I haven't pulled it apart yet. My season is over, and I really don't want to drop that kind of cash right now. So, I didn't even mess with it anymore. I just took to my freind's inside storage for the year. Thank's for the link's.

Yeah, the cash part sucks, no way around that, but there is no better time than winter to repair it.

good luck

QuickCal dont be to Quick to quit on it it might be a easier fix and cheaper then you think, if you blew a head gasket its much easier to fix rather than rebuilding you powerhead, you could easily do it even if you have never worked on a outboard motor before.

All you would need is the tools, gasket kit and about 4 hours of time to get her back running. Chances are its only a blown head gasket but there is no way to find out uness you open her up and check the pistons for scoring or breakage.

Ya, I got to thinking about it. Heck, I don't know why I even put it in storage. My favorite fishing lake is small enough to just use the trolling motor anyway. I think I might go ahead and bring it back home and pull the head.

The more I think about it, I'm pretty sure the head gasket is blown. When I took the plug's out, 3 out of 5 were still new looking. But they were brand new when this happened, so I didn't think much of it. I thought the 2 dirty one's were the problem. Would the compression number's I posted indicate a blown head gasket.

As you can tell, I'm no boat mechanic. Is there a chance that's all that could have happened with out doing further damage. Guess I'll go get the darn thing and pull the head.

Well it's done for. I pulled the head and it's not pretty.

I don't know the correct terminaligy, but here's what I think I see. Burnt piston's, and scored cylinder wall's. The head gasket was definatly blown. Maybe that's what's wrong with the piston's.

Now I just have to decide if I want to rebuild, or buy a Merc or something else. Tell me what you guy's think.

Here's some pic's.

Wow, I didn't know pistons could look like that. I am not a mechanic but it looks almost like the pistons started to melt or something, is it possible that your cooling system failed before this happened?

If I could afford a new Merc I would have done that instead of rebuilding my force 125, unfortunately that wasn't an option. I also didn't feel like having a new motor on my old boat, which means I would have to go out and by a new boat to go with the new motor.

How bad are the cylinder walls also, you would have to be sure that they can bore out the damage without destroying the sleeve. I could get up to .040 over-bored pistons for the 125, I assume yours would be same, I got my damage out by going .020 over. Maybe drive it over to a machine shop and ask them to look at it.

I am not sure where in Illinois you are but I took mine to Wintech engine in Big Bend, WI they have access to all parts and everything and were recommended by the 2 marine repair shops by me, actually they are the only machine shop listed in the outboard repair section of the phone book.

I guess it comes down to how much money you want to spend. Even if you rebuild, or buy a remanufactured powerhead, it will still be a force and not a merc.

I would think just dropping a remanufactured powerhead on would be more cost effective if that is your goal and you don't want to take on the rebuild yourself.

Good luck again, and let us know what you decide.
