Good judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgment.

Experience is something you get right after you need it.

... and the boy in the red hat got a big ol' dose that day, I don't think he'll be sledding or walking on ice for quite a while.

Interesting thought. They all know more about it now than each of us does

I actually study ice and ice fishing, my wife is Canadian and whenever we go up to visit in the winter I always get out on the ice for as many trips as I can.

I have a floatation suit (warm) I wear when out on the ice, and when I fish over cold waters here at home:

It'll float me and 2 people hanging on to me if I should ever take an icy or frigid plunge. Cold water isn't something you want to fool around with.

Here's a tragedy that happened yesterday when people ventured out onto thin ice:

Most people don't realize the thickness inconsistancies of a frozen body of water, or that they can save their own lives if they wear floatation when venturing out on the ice. It doesn't have to be an expensive floatation suit, just a regular boating PFD can save your life if you should fall through the ice.

People can live up to an hour or 2 in freezing water if they have the right equipment and/or do the right things:

and 20 minutes if they don't. That's how they die in relatively shallow or calm water or close to shore. You also quickly lose the use of your extremeties, so you sooner than you know it you can't do things like put on and buckle a PFD, operare a cell phone or radio, climb over the side of a boat, climb up a boat ladder, grab a rope, etc.

As a duck hunuter I pay a lot of attention to these things; we are at high risk: activity in small boats, isolated areas, dark, frigid water and air, storm conditions preferred, low visibility for rescuers.

I survived, just fine, a canoe accident that could have very well been fatal; the grim reminder was that on the same day, 2 other duck hunters in a canoe died. I was glad to see that my equipment and mental preparation worked.

The ice I encounter, which isn't often, is salt water ice so it's spongy. I never walk on it unless it's sitting on the bottom at low tide.

Re: Thin Ice Fail... Multiple Times!

Here in Michigan, we have tons of lakes and they are filled with fish and you guessed it, ice fisherman. So on Lake Huron, which is one of the great lakes for those who don't know, they rescue, every year, many, many people, who go out several miles on the ice to fish. The winds change and large chunks of ice break off and float out into the lake. Our Coast Guard and tax dollars are used to save these foolish people. Some have been on more than one helicopter ride. I think the first one is free, but then they start charging a fee for this type of behavior. But it still happens every year, and I will bet we have several deaths every year, because people don't use their head. I do ice fish, but haven't ever got wet, to me no fish is worth dying for.
