This is in one of our Southern California mountain resort areas (Wrightwood). Sadly, this is what happens when you have 15 million people within 100 miles of lakes that rarely ice over. Add to that that 14.9 million of them have never been in freezing temps. Awesome that no one died. Looks pretty close to a tragedy.

I copied and pasted this from a post on another forum....Why type it twice....

I viewed the same video in a boat forum that I frequent and the comments are almost identical. What I don't get is how everyone enjoys viewing other people's misfortune while sitting behind their computer screen and discussing how stupid people are.

I would hope that this many people are not that way in their personal dealing with others in life.

I hope my comments did not result in yours, sam. My point is somewhat similar to yours. People that grow up with no understanding of snow and ice just don't have the basic understanding that someone from the North would. Same people would never buy a black boat, but I see this in the north sometimes ;)

No, QC it was from the comments prior to yours. My point is if you don't have something positive to post, save it for your email pals. I just see too much of it lately. Getting soft as I age I guess.

As a former ice rescue instructor I believe this would make a good training film for students. Stupidity may not properly describe the actions shown, only lack of training. Many ice rescues end up as multiple fatalities from lack of training for rescue workers.

Our training programs were to train volunteer firefighters and such in proper methods. Given the types of personalities of LEO’s and firefighters sometimes they will try to do rescue almost with no regard for their own safety. The actions by those in the video are common with their wanting to help but not understanding the proper things to do.

On a lighter note we had one session where a slab about 10’ square broke and tipped 4 or 5 trainees into the water while they were standing to close to the open water watching a demonstration. Every one was wearing dry survivor suits and no harm was done. I do remember one fellow who was back about 15’ from the edge holding on to the tag end of a rescue line who refused to let go and slid across the ice on his butt and ended up with the rest of them.

That would be a positive use of a bad situation.

Well then, it must have been my comment. I guess I fail to see anything positive about the video. Maybe, stay off the ice if you don't know what you're getting yourself into. And no, I wasn't laughing when I watched it........

To be honest, the first time I watched it, I didn't laugh... at first, but as more and more people went through the ice I found it comical... kinda like a 3 Stooges short. I was sitting there thinking "how many people have to go through the ice before y'all get everyone off the ice that isn't helping with the rescue?"

The first guy that went in with the red hat nearly lost his life, you can see him sinking deeper and deeper as his clothes saturate and become heavier... they got to him just in the nick of time.

That's the thing, at some point common sense needs to kick in whether a person knows about the dangers of ice or not.....

Good discussion actually, even though we need to be careful we don't get heated in any way. Fact is that most of us here, that kind of understand the risks of cold water, probably started out viewing with a gasp and concern. With that said, once you know the outcome it is hard to watch without shaking your head, and maybe even a nervous grin. There is soooooo much done wrong, and even the couple recording it, while obviously panicked, still have a choice word or two for some of the participants. I find the guy throwing the tangled mess of rope into the water particularly annoying, although I also know that in a moment of panic we may all do something equally stupid . . .

OK I'll bite--what's the deal with a black boat, and the north?

With our heat, and high sun, they are literally dangerous. It was a bad example, but I was noting that ice smarts comes with ice knowledge. Extreme heat smarts comes with extreme heat. The only point being that people that do dumb stuff in the cold, may not be dumb. Just inexperienced.

I had a occasion to talk to a gentleman on the lake one sunny July day who was not displaying a registration decal. A beautiful all black restoration of a 23’ bow rider with a nice flame paint job. I found out he just finished the boat and it was the first time out and his stickers were still in his wallet.

Discovered that he was in the business of restoring classic cars and after telling him how nice the job was I asked him how the all black interior paint and the black and red cushions were working out for him. He started to laugh and said that the next time I saw him on the lake it won’t be that color anymore.

Good judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgment.

We have made our modern world so much safer in so many ways--which is good--that too many people assume they are always safe. The classic case is that of the tourist who goes for a hike and gets caught by bad weather. We no longer take a careful approach to the unknown; we assume we know it all and what we don't know, we will be warned about. But it doesn't work that way, so those people who have never seen ice, or who don't know the dangers of hypothermia, blythely wander out on the ice, fall in, and draw in more victims who don't knwo how to rescue someone.
I went to Maine one winter and saw people out driving on the ice and it looked like so much fun--but I knew I knew nothing about it so no way was I going to chance it, not read the ice correctly and fall in. I can read my marsh grass to know where to walk and where not to; the guy from Maine can't; and that's what kept me off it. Better to know what you don't know.

I am a snow skier, and ex Ski Patroller. Yes, even here in SoCal. Despite my comments, there are a few lakes, at high altitude that partially freeze over every year. I have NEVER walked on one. Scares the ship outta me.
