Give the Serial Number to Mercury Marine. They can/will make sure that engine can be found if anybody wants warranty work.

That doesn't help the loss but it may catch a crook.

Most states do not "title" outboards.

The ONLY reason for titling one is "Taxing" one.

Or making theft all but none existant. Kind of hard to get a title for a stolen OB and if you don't have the title you aren't going on the water in my state, you can't get a registration.
By that reasoning there shouldn't be any auto theft. Ever hear of a car being stolen?

Well, it does make it a little more complicated. To sell the car intact, they have to get fake VINs and fake up a title. Granted, there is a pretty solid industry based around this for cars. That said, most stolen cars are stripped for parts, even though more and more parts are marked with the VIN.

The Lund I bought in 2001 measures 16'10" which is just under the 17 feet where title is required in Iowa, optional for shorter boats. The salesman recommended that I drop the tenner on a title to make it more difficult for a thief to make a sale. This way the registration certificate is stamped TITLED and no legitimate buyer, e.g. dealer, will take it without the title. Like most people, I keep the registration cert in the boat but have the title locked up. If some unfortunate soul DOES buy it and goes to register it, he will have to produce the title or get fitted for handcuffs. If it's not titled, the registration cert is ownership.

I love the state of Illinois, and from reading here I see it's not just Illinois--- I need a title for a $50 boat, but no title for a $10,000 motor. What kind of people do we have making our laws???

But all they would have to do is take it to a state that does not require the motor to be titled. I've never hear of needing a title for a motor. Even the Serial Numbers for the motors are not checked here in FL, so OB theft is pretty common.

Hopefully your ins covers it.

Sucks for sure; I hate thieves!

Not sure what good it would be to have a title on that motor. Those thieves will use that motor as long as they want, they can't sell it, (would have to remove the serial #s) but they can part it out.

Only good things about this recession and being divorced is most of my stuff is old and no one wants to steal it.
