I went to the cottage this weekend to finish winterizing the boat and make up a new frame to tarp it down. Imagine my dismay when I find that my 60 hp 4 stroke Bigfoot has been stolen. The thieves unbolted it from the transom. They were kind enough not to cut the cables. It had to be more than one guy because the motor is nearly 300 lbs. Everything was meticulously disconnected. I have to think someone now has a free upgrade.
I guess I don't need to change the oil now, but I am really pi@$%^.:mad:

Re: Thieving B@$t@rd$ stole my motor.

I know the feeling, I had some car audio stolen once. Took the subs and amp but left the box because they could not get it out of the trunk they also left a nice new alpine headunit and it was 8 screws and it was out. They also tried to steal the car but only I could keep it running so they started ripping parts off the motor like the intercoller, butsted out glass, trunk lock, tore up the steering colomn.

Are there anything we can do in this situation? I leave my outboard kicker on the boat in an open storage on trailer. The so called secured place isn't so secured people can go in and out during normal business hours. Even with the serial number in hand I doubt it'll say much since it's only a sticker.

Sorry to hear that, but keep an eye on local craigslist. they may have stolen it to sell so maybe the stupid sobs will try that and you can buy it back from them with the help of the cops;)

That totally blows.... Sounds like they knew what they were doing. I'm sure you've already reported it to the local police, but you may also want to stroll around some marinas/boatyards.

Don't just check you local craigslist. Use this: http://www.jaxed.com/cgi-bin/home.cgi and you can check all craigslists throughout Canada and the States. It will also search ebay and kijiji all at once. If you're lucky, you might see it again.

Sorry to hear it. Sounds like no locking mechanism would have helped. They got you once; unfortunately, they may very well target you again. When you replace the motor, as much of a pain in the rear as it'll be, you may want to think about putting spot welds on the bolts. It won't make it impossible to steal, but it will absolutely slow them down enough so that they may just move on.

We just had one stolen locally here and it had a real good locking system on it, they just used a cordless sawzall and cut the transom around the motor mount!

If they want it, they are going to get it somehow.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune...

That stinks. Seems to be a bad week. Someone stole two of the guide posts off of my lift a few days ago. Not a huge loss, but just a PIA to replace and who knows if it will be a regular occurance.

What rat bass terds. Sorry to hear that Jeepman. I see you're in Cambridge. Where's your cottage at. If close to mine I would certainly keep an eye out for any re-power projects. Likely though it's a fair ways away by now.

Bad news, for sure.

Hope you have title and good insurance.

I had a titled and insured outboard stolen years ago. State Farm had me boating again in less than a week.

As mentioned above, upgrading is a good possibility.

If that's the case, as you watch craiglist for your motor, keep your eyes peeled for someone selling a similar sized older 2 stroke.

I did some research over the weekend pursuant to another thread and found that only 6 states (Texas, Utah, S. Carolina, Oklahoma, Ohio and Missouri) require any kind of titling for outboards and Mississippi has it optional. The other 43 don't even have the option of titling an outboard. Haven't checked on Canadian provinces.

No titles are required on outboard motors in Canada.
