On a 1983 johnson 50hp, do I need to take off the cylinder head cover to get access to the thermostat? Or is there an easier way?

Re: thermostat question

I think I'll just change the thermostat and the gasket. I don't see how the poppet could have anything wrong, it is a hard piece of plastic. And the spring, could it really be needing replacement???

Re: thermostat question

how do I test it to see? Also, it has been recommended that I use some gasket sealer when I put the gasket back on, but which kind exactly are we talking about? I went to the parts store and they told me the red rtv silicone was what I needed, but I have done some reading and I have heard about some of the "brown" stuff that I think is made by 3M, anyone have the answer for me? I just want to do this once, so I want the right stuff.

Re: thermostat question

I use the brown gasket sealing compound that you speak of. It has a built in brush on the lid of the can. Go to your local BRP dealer/mechanic, they will have it. DOnt worry about testing the poppet valve, just replace it while you're in there.

Re: thermostat question

does anyone know the name of this stuff? So I can ask the guy behind the parts counter and actually get the right stuff?

Re: thermostat question

My can is an actual BRP product. It is blue, and titled Johnson Evinrude Gasket Sealing Compound. It is in a 4 FL OZ can (118 mL). Make sure you get the can with the brush attached to the lid. PN number 508235
