Read 2 reports in the paper today.

Most all of the debris was less than 6" in length according to several involved in the search.

Does seem strange indeed.

This is quite the mystery around here. Why does no one know (or say) what this "larger vessel" was? Illegal/untracked vessel? Military?

I actually think Submarine . . .

That makes sense considering the wreckage.

I'm surprised at no PFD's on the crew. I've been "boomed" off a sailboat one time (and I've sailed quite a bit). That was enough to tell me if I can't confidently swim to shore, or the sailin' is getting even slightly rambunctious ... put on a flotation device.

That's possible. They are based there. I almost ran into a docked one when I was leaving the harbor in the fog before GPS was around.

Don't suppose the boat somehow got hit and then sucked into the prop of a sub or other large ocean-going ship, therefore the small pieces of debris?....I mean that boat was like it was in a blender or something!

It would be highly unusual for a U.S. submarine to surface without first coming to periscope depth and visually clearing the area.
Even if there was a collision, they (a U.S. submarine) would have reported it.

I'll never forget this story, and it is what made me suggest a Sub.

Then on 14 June, during the shoot, Houston snagged a tow cable, sinking the tugboat Barcona in the San Pedro Channel near Santa Catalina Island, and drowning a tugboat crewmember. In defense of the Houston, the tug boat was operating in a restricted operating area, at night, without proper running lights on the barge it was towing and with too long of a tow cable . While sonar was aware the tugboat was in the area (designated as Sierra 22) it was on a course that was well west of the boat.

This poor boat is jinxed . . .

Based on the article in this morning's San Diego UT the wreckage was in the vicinity of the shipping lane. One speculation was a large commercial vessel struck it during the night and ran over it with the props chewing up the hull. Coast Guard is in the process of tracking vessels in the area at the approximate time of the incident.

Yeah, just found that on the LA Times site as well. The debris field and the Coast Guard comments are not consistent with that though. Still very, very odd.

This is why I say that they have the data on anything big. Heck I have it in real time: http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/

The way the currents run there (very strong and steady from South to North), the North end of that island is like the the turbulent area behind a wing in flight; lots of eddies and wierd strong cross currents. That's why that area is known as "Pukey Point." Seems to me they just got too close, got sucked in, bashed about, and the debris spread in all directions.

Looks like ajgraz was correct.

I have been down to those islands a couple times and that point of the island would be extremely dangerous if you got in close.

I've been down there too, used to split the Islands on our way out for Albacore. This is interesting, and it is still odd to me that the Coast Guard was chasing something else. And what 7 knots max?

KGTV-TV in San Diego reported that U.S. Sailing Association President Gary Jobson told the television station that a woman on another sailboat said she saw a cargo ship hit the Aegean; however, U.S. Sailing Marketing Director Amy Larkin could not confirm this information.
