sterndrive stuck

looking for help...in an attempt to re-install an alpha one sterndrive, we screwed up and managed to get the drive stuck so it won't go on and won't come off. any ideas of how to get the sterndrive off?

desperate and feeling a little dumb!!

Need a little more info. How far on is it? Did you get the nuts that hold it on started on the studs? Did you try to pull it down with the nuts and jam it? Or is it stuck before the holes in the outdrive get to the studs on the bellhousing?

Thanks for the reply.....we got it off. It appears that brute force and ignorance was both the problem and the solution.......

Brute force is necessary sometimes... but the ignorance part of the solution will probably cause another problem.

Did you check the alignment? Did you check the gimbal bearing to make sure it is smooth? Everything in forward gear? These are just some of the things to check.

Heres a hint for next time, passed on to me by Don S..or was it Bond O..oh geez..

If your having a helluva time..

lift up the OD a bit, put a 2X4 across the lower "ears" of the transom plate..
And slam that sunofagun down against the 2x4..popped mine off like butter, even with years of gunk holding her on...

I am wondering if alignment was checked before putting the drive back on.
