I recently had my outboard motor stolen. The thieves were able to cut through the padlock on a panther outboard motor lock. Does anyone have any suggestions as to heavier duty motor locks I could look into purchasing? Ideally I would like the most difficult one to remove available as I live in a large city where theft is common. I'm also looking for suggestions on additional anti theft devices/chains/etc. I could add to the outboard motor as a further deterrent. Maybe a locking device that sounds an alarm when cut?

Thank you in advance for any advice offered.

Unfortunately battery powered tools have made it easy.. guess you could take the motor off when you leave the boat...

Get insurance.

If a thief wants your motor, they will take it. Many times with the boat.

After buying an E bike I started looking for the ultimate lock to secure it if I were to lock it up somewhere. After doing some research I came to the conclusion there is no ultimate lock and that i will not be going to the store or anywhere else that requires me to take my butt off of the bike. With a cordless grinder and about 30 seconds any lock and chain or cable can be cut.

maybe make the motor look as crappy as possible as to deter further theft.

it might look redneckish but i would paint the lower unit a different color to make it look like it has been replaced, scuff up the pretty paint to make it dull. primer spots on the motor cover to make it look repaired, pull starter cord out about 6 inches and clamp somehow so it looks like it wont retract all the way. thieves will walk right by. crappy looking with power or get used to oars. jmo

Get a gps locator device, they are tiny and can be hidden inside. Would love to be able to walk in and catch them red handed !!

how about a bright motion sensor light right over the boat, a board full of nails right under the motor and a big angry dog tied to the boat? Seriously the only sure way is take off the motor and bring inside or store in back of car.

Find an old junk motor and attach a tiny gps tracker and let them steal it, when they do, have the police ready to go arrest them. If it were me, I would forget the police and grab a few friends and give them a visit. trackers are cheap and little, used inside folks luggage
