Last weekend I was on a routine patrol when a serious road traffic collison occurred. The full story can be read here: http://www.thisisthenortheast.co.uk/display.var.1234707.0.fund_launched_for_crash_boy.php

The young family in the car were wiped out in a split second but we managed to save the life of an 8yr old boy in the car.

I'm not posting to ask for donations to the fund the paramedics set up, I'm simply posting in the hope that someone reads this and thinks about their own, other peoples, and their familiy's safety when driving.

I obviously can't go into any details about this tragic event until after the legal issues have been dealt with, suffice to say that another vehicle was involved and that driver is the subject of a criminal investigation.

The story will be upsetting for a lot of you folks so I haven't given many details here, I'll let you decide for yourself if you want to read about it.

A very sad and tragic accident and one of the worst I've seen in a long time.

Re: The worst part of my job.

Hello old friend......

We have all read about fires, accidents and un-timely deaths and all agree as we sit safe by our computer but, when you are part of the story it has a big effect.

I am glad see hear about a survivor. I imagine this incident makes your job even more important day to day. I know when I see an accident regardless of serious or not it serves as a reminder and I always give the wife an extra hug that day.

I hope you don't see anther accident for a long time.... never would be better.

Re: The worst part of my job.

Well hello old friend too 8)

I've not been about here lately, thanks to the job, but as you so rightly say, incidents like the one above just seem to reinforce how important it is to be out there, even on the boring days. And yes, there are boring days, where nothing much happens and you spend eight or more hours wondering if you are making a difference. Last Saturday started as just one of those days.

I think we're all amazed that anyone managed to get out of the wreck, let alone survive it but again I don't want to say anymore than what is already in the press at this time for fear of compromising the investigation and the legal process. I think you folks will be rather angry when the suspected causes of this incident come to light and, if people feel it is acceptable, I'll update the docksiders as things progress.

Thanks for the kind words, especially the final sentence, I too hope I never see another one like this, ever..............

Re: The worst part of my job.

I really don't like the term "accident" for this sort of event.

The term implies that it was beyond the control of those involved, which it very rarely is. Whether it was intentional is irrelevant, some human decision to accept risk made it happen. That's what Bro. Dave calls "premeditated carelessness".

Call it a crash. Identify what human decision(s) placed victims at risk, and apply consequences.

Re: The worst part of my job.

You know JB, you're a very astute man. In the UK we stopped call them Road Traffic Accidents (RTA) a while ago and they are now termed Road Traffic Collisions (RTC) for precisely the reasons you stated.

It's very seldom that no-one is to blame, even when only one vehicle is involved.

I'd love to give a bit more background on this one right now, but you'll appreciate my hands are tied, but your third sentence starts to move towards the cause a fair bit.

As I said, if the docksiders are happy with this, I'd like to update you all in the future on this one, in the hope that just one person reads it and thinks about possible consequences of their actions.

The same reasons that motivate most first-responders are the ones that kept me from applying for a fireman's job in 1976. God bless you and all those who have what it takes, SE.
