I removed the lower end of my Merc 50 HP from the '80s and went to get help from a shop to put it back in as I could not get it to go in all the way. The mechanic gave it "a couple of love taps" using a heavy hammer and a 2x4. Problem being now, the water pump was not shooting through the side, so I took the bottom end out again and much to my surprise the copper tube must not have been in place when the love taps were given and I can't seem to giggle it down to fit into the plastic piece. Any idea of what I can do now? Can I change the entire tube? Where does it lead to at the top end of this tube????? Oh no new at this :confused:

It does not look like the tube was bent as far as I could see with the flashlight.

Well, you need to line it up when reinstalling the lower, usually you don't need to wiggle down on it, more like line it up so it goes in when reinstalling.

the problem is, that since he gave it the love taps, the tube seems too short to fall into place on the plastic impeler cover. Previously, I had to guide it with a screwdriver and it would sit in properly, now it won't even reach the plastic housing.

Looks like the water tube goes into a seal into the top of the exhaust housing (as most do) . Try pulling it out and see if there is damage to where it insert into the housing.

You need to grease the end of the tube to help it slide into place.
You could also use the guide tube that goes into the pump top (Part Nr. 35); if it doesn't have
one a dealer should.

That diagram is for an 80 hp, the 74 50 hp shows none.

Thanks a bunch, I've taken the tube right out and sure enough the end was damaged. I guess the love taps were just a bit too hard and sent the tube upwards too much so that the water could not travel through and get to the top of the motor.

Re: the water tube from the impeler

at least now I have the part to bring to a shop and perhaps have a copper pipe imaged to the same specs as this one that would not have any defects at the end. If all else fails, I can go to the dealer and order a new tube. Those love taps are going to be somewhat expensive.
