Re: The vagaries of the English language

I love the title to this thread..."vagaries"? Would that be a bunch of guys named Gary from Virginia?

Also why are they called 'apartments' when they are all built together?
It is not YUUNS...it is "y'uns" when trying to say "all of ya'll".

You wanna hear some butchered English? Come to the Middle East!!

Boating terms- (All from Craigslist)
What exactly is a 'billows'? (Is that a cloud of something?)
Is it your 'gamble baring' making noise?
Is the 'bildges' pump working?
The 'barings' in the 'tralor' need 'fixin'.
The 'propellor' has 27 'splindeds' on the 'sproket'.
Boat needs 'TLC'. (Is this a new fetish? None for me...thanks)
The 'bloke' 'freezed' and broke. (Is this a cold, poor, Brit?)
Outdrive and Sterndrive are roughly the same things,
but 'Inboard' and 'Outboard' are way different than
an 'I/O'. And none of them are 'inbored' or 'outbored'.
There are way more. CL is a vast chasm of brutalized language.
