Re: The underside of free enterprise...

There are obviously good guys and bad guys in this business, but not at the ratio we might like. The auto sales industry as a whole epiomizes the approach that anything that is not explicitely forbidden by law is acceptable - regardless of its consequences for the buyer. (..."As well as anything that IS forbidden, but we can get away with....") There's no resemblance to what we Americans like to call a value system.

It's just disgusting.

Well, I can't fault the dealerships too much. Nobody can take advantage of you unless you generally let them. The option is to read up on your vehicle which of course, many don't....particularly in all due fairness, Women.
A car is an expensive investment and the basics concerning its maintenance, etc are well worth a bit of reading and understanding particularly if no knowledge brings the risk of a very large financial hit.
My two bits.

Our local Ford dealer offers a program where every 5th oil change is free. And with 2 vehicles that comes in handy. They are cheaper than the quick lube places and I don't have to put up with all the "You need _______ replaced" sales pitches.

I have come to expect this from dealerships, but when you brought up the underside of free enterprise what always makes me gasp is when you hear about natural disasters and how people are being gouged for fuel and food.

That is a true captive clientelle I guess.
