Well, Let me first tell you about myself. I am a 30 something year old self proclaimed jack of all trades and master of none. I enjoy pittling with things and seeing progress in work. I currently work as a paramedic on an ambulance in Tulsa OK, but this job is a means to the end job of a Firefighter/Para at TFD(My dream job), which I start in may/june. I am a father of 2 beautiful girls, and husband to a fox who thinks she is the boss.

Ok so here is where this all fits into this forum. Early in my marriage I coerced the "boss" into buying a boat. We drove to St Louis and bought a Larson 206 SEI. I grew up on the lake but had very little knowledge of newer boats. I grew up skiing behind my dads bass boat. The boat was a blast, well for two summers until the deck became even softer than it was prior to the purchase, and the boat became so heavy that getting onto plane sucked down half a tank of fuel. After further inspection last year, I found that the boat had a ton of wet foam, shotty deck replacement from PO, and the wood in the transom could be penetrated with a finger. Needless to say, the "Boss" swore off boating or any thought of buying another boat. So being a great husband, I begin shopping and researching repairs(where I found the iboats site). I have been reading here for quite some time and have been hesitant to get started on my project because I know what a lot of you make look so easy is actually more work than that larson is worth to me. I wasn't a fan of the boat itself anyhow.

So this is where it gets funny. The boat has a great VP 5.7GL and SX outdrive. I never had a problem with the motor or outdrive and knew that was invaluable to me. I kept my eye on CL and EBay looking for a decent project boat w/ cracked block or no motor at all. Then one day it happened. I found a Tahoe 202 on EB. Problem was that it was in Miami FL. Boat was theft recovery and was stripped of all mechanical, guages, dash, and anything else that I already had. So before FriscoBoater made the trip to Disney, for a boat that needed some work, I once again coerced the "boss" into taking a family vacation to florida and just so happened to have pulled my empty boat trailer down with us. Picked up the Tahoe for 1k and felt it was a steal. All cushions there and intact but need redone. Just a quick swap and some "minor" gelcoat work, and we would be back on the water. I have had many Ideas since I began this project and done more reading than working, I stumbled upon Ooops's novel on here which took up the better part of a month(slow reader), and learned some valuable info. I decided to replace all the hard to reach components on the 5.7 and have really found that "Ayuh" Bond'o has answered just about any question regarding the motor in a previous post. I just finished reading some more of YD's amazing info on glass repair. Don S is the man who I look for for all of the direction on where to find something else that isn't easy to find. There are many others on here that I read but the point is I have yet to have to post any questions because you guys are so dang awesome at answering q's and putting all this great info out here.

I have been working on the switch for a while now and am finding out that this site has made me somewhat of a perfectionist. I have been taking pics and will continue to post my progress here and hope that it will help someone somewhere feel that no project is too big with the help of those on this site. Also know there is already an answer for just about any question that someone new has here already.

More to follow with pics as to my "project", but just wanted to start out by thanking all of you guys(too many to mention all of), who have already helped me more than you know without ever knowing it. You are an awesome group and I hope to one day have the knowledge to continue this legacy you have began.

Very Respectfully,

Mike:)

Re: The Switcharoo

Ok now onto my project, My previous boat was a 97 Larson SEI w/ 5.7L Volvo penta and SX outdrive, New boat is 2005 Tahoe 202 Deck, w/ very little wood to worry about but it's all dry anyhow as it came from Miami. Upholstery is shot but tax return will get it to the upholstery shop in a few weeks. I pulled the 5.7 out and found so much ROT in the larson it was amazing that thing floated. I had no clue if the VP transom assembly would mount up to the old hole from the Merc that was previously in the boat. It did though and I had two holes left over :). A little filler 3M 4200 and that is no longer a problem. I have found lots of the hard to find parts on ebay such as the dash inlay and a few other odds and ends and found that patience is of a virtue on the wallet here. Being the inquisitive fellow I am, I pulled everything off the block and just finished wire brushing the whole thing and painting it with hi-temp paint. I can't stand rust. I found a new Edelbrock 600cfm marine carb on Eb for 100 and it will replace the old holley that needed a rebuild anyhow. Now I am looking for an edelbrock 2104/2604 intake at a decent price as this 5.7 has the 217 heads with canted center bolts. I wish it had vortec heads but am not going to get into that here. The previous intake is heavy and I just want to replace it. It is a 2 plane highrise but cast and extremely heavy. Here is where my question lies for you old timers with much more experience than me. This hull is sold with a 4.3l Merc and You can upgrade to a 5.0 MPI if you have the cash. I can't find much info on to how much more this 5.7L will weigh than 5.0. I wouldn't think it would be much but I can't help but to lie in bed, once the boss is asleep, and think of getting this all done and put it in the water to find it is too rear heavy. So what do you think guys? Too much motor for the boat? I am not as fortunate as friscoboater, and due to some very unhappy homeowners assoc members have to work on my boat for a few hours here and there and am not allowed to leave it in the drive overnight. They have already fined me 25 bucks for 3 days and am not happy about it. Gelcoat has some minor dings and dents here and there and the whole boat had sat outside uncovered in the florida sun for 2-3 years. Needless to say it was chalky but found that step sanding up to 1200 then lots of buffing and it can look great again. Not quite done with it but have some gelcoat repair to finish first. But back to my first question for you guys, how much more does a 5.7GL weigh than the original option of 5.0MPI and what kind of difference will I see in HP? I am pretty excited about this project and could type all night but I don't want to bore you guys.

Welcome to iBoats from a Fellow Broken Arrow Boater!!!!

Thanks sir, I have been watching your work as of lately too and it looks as it is coming together nicely. That is going to be a great looking boat soon. Which lake do you frequent? I sure like skiatook but FT Gibson is so much closer as we live east of BA.

Here are some pics of the project

Below is the 5.7 out of the Larson, I painted the block and have been hunting for all new replacement components and will keep the old ones as spares, i.e. fuel pump, starter, etc.

This is my new edelbrock 1409. I hope I am happy with this carb. I have done tons of research and a bunch of guys on here swear by it. They say it should be set out of the box.

The day I drove from Orlando and picked up the boat. They about had a fit when they saw me park this boat on top of the parking garage at the Mariot, I got a lot of strange looks and was called by the front desk. I called ahead of time and made sure this wasn't a problem but they probably weren't expecting this. It all worked out though. The parking garage was 3/4 empty anyway. I was the only one on the top. My wife was still a little embarassed I am quite sure though. We had a blast at disney and seaworld though.

Finally Home and in the driveway and I pulled the rubrail and began to get ready for some sanding and buffing.

Pulled all the seats out. I was so happy that all were there. Actually there is very little missing that can't be found easily.

Re: The Switcharoo

as you can see in the gel coat this boat has been abused. There are a few very deep gouges but nothing that I feel is going to be too tough to make new again.

Re: The Switcharoo

Like I said earlier this boat was a theft recovery and when I got it it was missing the outdrive and motor. They actually cut the motormounts and left them bolted to the floor. They did leave the merc transom assembly and Y pipe though. The fork on the bottom of the gimbal housing is broken on the (L)side. The rest of the housing and other parts look alright though.

This stuff is all junk and will end up getting sold or given away eventually.
