okay A friend an I went halves on a a real cheap boat, turns out it's a Gem, It look real nice and runs well. It's a 1973 MFG gypsy with a 130 hp Johnson OB motor. I can't wait to get it out on the water.

We know absolutly nothing about boat.

The plug in the back. That always get attached from the outside right? We were wondering if it woud be best to do it from the in side. We stared at it. It was silent for 10 seconds, and we both wondered if there is higher pressure outside the boat than inside the boat essentially keeping the plug in place rather than pushing it out (if it were plugged from the inside)..

Not trying to get all technical... But is that correct? Always plug the boat from the outside?? This is such a feeble question I'm sure, but we are so excited about this boat...but know nothing about it.

thanks for your help

Re: the Plug??

If you can reach it form the inside that is fine. Even better if you launch having forgotten to plug you can plane out let the water run out then plug her.

Really doesn't matter that much if your plug is tight. At the level it would be at when at rest there isn't much pressure anyway.

MOST important is to plug period.

Re: the Plug??

there are typically 2 types of plugs--the metal ones that screw in to a metal threaded sleeve (they go in from the outside before launching) and the fat rubber ones that go into a smooth hole--preferably they go in from the inside, but not all boats are set up that way.

But before you and your friend take it anywhere near the water, take the boating safety course--even if you do it on line. Owning and operating a boat is nothing like a car.

Welcome to iboats--tell us more about your boat and where you will use it

Inside or outside - if it fits, it can go either way. Pressure really isn't an issue if the plug is snug.

not to be cutting or anything but there alot of serious things to think about when preparing/launching/and using a boat. Take a saftey course! Also spend some time in the stupid human trick forum, you can learn very valuable lessons!

Better to read it now than to be in it later!

Re: the Plug??

I had a '72 MFG Gypsy that I just sold last year. Great boat! I used to put my plug in from the inside. I also had a small chain attached to the plug and the transom so the plug wouldn't get lost in the bilge (or elsewhere) when it was removed from the bilge drain hole. Also, my MFG had a drain in the well in front of the outboard. Don't put a plug in that hole. You want that well to drain out on it's own if it fills up. Have Fun!

Hey 123 I know which well your talking about. I think there are actually 4 holes in that well. My friend plugged 3 of them.. Should none of them be plugged???
