After a 6 mo hiatus on my Gulfstream restoration project, it is now again in motion. As you all may recall I had the stolen motor problem in early December and that took the wind out of my sails.

I am close to having the replacement motor ready for action and now have to concentrate on finishing all of the periferal details. The accompanying pictures show some of that detail work. I still have to finish anchoring my new flooring and finishing the foaming and glassing but at least I'm moving forward.

Here is the before picture of my intermediate housing:

and here is the after. I bead blasted the unit, and painted the outboard portion with 2 part poly matched to the original OMC white. The inboard portion was painted with POR 15 black. I replaced all the seals and updated the drive shaft with the heavier splined later model 800 series shaft and coupler.

Bring it on up Realgun. We can do them both together. We'll hang them from my forklift, wire brush them, clean them with suitable metal prep, prime them with glyptol then overspray them with POR 15 Thunderbird red.

They'll look real sweet.

Happy Memorial Day Weekend! Sure wish my boat had been ready. It'll be in the mid 80's here for the weekend. Extremely unusual. Historicallly it would be 60's and raining.

Happy to see you back on track!

Question on bead blasting... how did you do it?
I have a 100 gal compressor, but have never blasted anything... yet. I got a trailer that is in dier need.

This is what I used KG.
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=30979

Here are other options.
http://order.harborfreight.com/EasyAsk/harborfreight/results.jsp

I picked up a bag of actual glass bead from a local industrial supplier. I didn't want to blast it all the way down to bare aluminum. I just wanted to rough up the existing finish. Next time I would use a more aggressive glass bead.

For your trailer, you definitely want to use sand. Blasting is the only way to go. You can roll the trailer right out onto your lawn. The sand would be good for the lawn. You want to be sure to wear face, eye and hand protection.

Excellent job boom, it is obvious that you have an eye for detail.

Can't wait to see the finished boat!

Aldo

There is a more suitable method of blasting in an open enviroment than sand blasting. It's called wet sand blast. Works on the same principle as air but the medium is propelled by water instead. it hooks up to your garden hose and is pumped like a high pressure washer. If you have neighbors they'll appreciate it. theres no great cloud of dust during the process and it does just as good of job. Talk to your local rental supply/yard. Nice job on the intermediate housing. what drive are you using?

Thanks for the 'wet' sandblast info DD.

My drive setup is a morphidite OMC. It is a 1975 electric shift OMC intermediate housing hooked to a 1979 hydra-mechanical shift 800 stringer drive. I've owned the boat since new and for the first several years the electric shift would periodically lose momentary electrical continuity, under load, and break the forward drive slinky. No ome could fix it. So in late '79 I converted it to the later drive, which everyone said was impossible. Been great ever since.

Re: The long march resumes!

Tonight I finished installing my flooring from the front of the gas tank well to the transom. I also got the foam poured in those rear side bays. I'll get some pictures posted once I finish installing the the front panel.

My imported 1/2" 7ply decking did pass my saturation and drying test. It's been three weeks since I started testing it and the untreated sample appears as sound as before the testing.

As I was installing the floor (peanut butter and stainless screws) I reflected that this work better prevent future rot and saturation. The next time someone would ever have to disassemble this boat, it won't be easy.

The original floor was not glued (only sticking to the foam) and the nails that were used to hold the flooring to the stringers had disintigrated. Now with epoxy saturated flooring held down with peanutbutter and stainless screws, they'd have to rip out everything down to the bare hull 'cause it won't be coming apart in pieces like the last time.

Re: The long march resumes!

I Think JasonJ coined that term. It is epoxy mixed with a thickener such as cabosil or wood flour. It is mixed to the consistancy of peanut butter. The purpose is to make the epoxy stay put and be a more effective adhesive as well as enabling the epoxy to span gaps.
