After all my work to get the motor running on all cylinders i took the boat to the river today and it fell flat on its face.
man what a bummer!!!! it will move the boat in basically an idol but when i really give it some throttle it acts like there is no prop, i dont go anywhere. it rev's up good but im not moving, any thoughts on this. starting to get really frustrated with this motor. you tell me what to do and ill do it.

Sounds like it has a spun prop.

If it revs up and you're not moving it is usually a spun prop. The rubber hub has given away. To verify, remove the prop, draw a black line across the hub and prop from the inside. Run the prop again and check to see if the lines have moved. If that's not it, ensure it is running on 2 cylinders. Sometimes it can run well on one at idle.

Sounds like a spun prop hub. Put a mark on the prop shaft and one on the prop in alignment and the run it. I the marks get out of alignment the hub is slipping.

If it is a spun prop what does that mean? a new prop? ill check it out tomorrow after work. can i do this test in a barrel or do i need to put it back in the river?

You have to test it on the water. It has to have a load on it. There are places that can repair it, even on-line, but it might be worth it to buy a new one. Shop around. I recall many posts about this here on iBoats. If you do a search, you'll find links for prop repair and places to purchase.

this morning before work i did put the motor in gear and rotated the prop by hand, it turned but the shaft didnt. will it do this while not under a load?

If it spins on the shaft with very little effort, then you have a broken or missing drive pin (shear pin).

Re: The johnson 33hp saga continues

I took the end cap off the prop and the shear pin is all good. but it does take just a little force to spin the prop while its in gear, i can do it one handed. the prop turns and the shaft doesnt. i havent marked it and put it in the water to see if the marks are misaligined,
but it sure seems that is the problem. i wouldnt think i should be able to turn it at all.

If the pin is good and it turns that easily, you've got a spun hub. Never heard of one turning that easily. Usually you can only demonstrate it as described, and even if the hub is spun, you won't be able to turn it by hand.
