Mike,

I am sure the classic anglers knew of the potentially bigger fish up the Mong. However, the timing and uncertainty of lock traffic was a risky gamble of being back by 3PM not to mention the valuable fishing time it would consume during locking through.

From a spectators point of view, this worked very well for watching the guys do thier thing as many folks were able to watch them fish from the shore. I watched as Kevin Wirth worked a bank on the Mong about 15 yards away from the sidewalk I was standing on.

After watching this classic it make me feel better about myself when I fish rivers. Skinny little green thing, looks like smallmouth doesn't weight that much. You would think a 12 incher weight at least a pound but Cochran's 5 fish only weight a little over 4 lbs.

I appreciate your info Flatiron, so I gave up fishing for golf, then wouldn't you know I hit a squirrel with a golf ball and killed the poor thing. Going to take up target shooting next. LOOK OUT BEHIND MY TARGET. If the Lord did not have wanted us to fish, he would not have given them mouths.

I live near that sign (about 8 miles). It is tough fishing in those rivers and traversing through the locks can take alot of time with all the barge traffic in the area. As for the small size of the fish, I think that is natures way of telling you not to eat them(not of legal size)those rivers are pretty contaminated from all the mines and steel mills.

People Eating Tasty Animals

I loved watching this classic... It fits with the type of fishing I grew up with as a kid on the rivers in the flint hills of kansas and the ozarks of arkansas....

I think KVD is an awesome angler with a ton of class...

Mike Icconeless, what a smuck for propping his book and CD at the weigh-in!
