Re: The "American Dream"

dogsdad, you script is much better than mine, I agree with you and I also am blessed.

JB, Why do you feel the need to threaten others. You advised me in another thread to quit whining which is attacking me personally. This thread you refer to my remark as being cynical which is personal, you could have as easily left that out but you used it as a personal attack.

My remarks are based toward your abuse of power and biased actions.

CJY, You points are exactly what I am speaking of and I think most who wish to see understand what you have said so well. Thanks for clarifying what I meant.

txs,

You still miss the point. YOU cited the "37 million living below poverty". I think JB's point was not that there AREN'T poor people, but that the qty. noted is based on criteria that does not come close to defining true poverty. Sadly, yes, there are still people that are honestly impoverished. Not 37 million of them . . .

Right. The government's so-called "poverty line" is strictly atrificial and arbitrary.

When I was pre-school age and my first sister was just a toddler, my mom was on her own. She later told me she would lay in bed crying because we often had no food in the cupboards other than some beans and some flour or such. I was surprised to learn this. I had no idea we were poor and suffering. I was a happy kid, and played outside a lot and I do not remember ever going hungry then.

I look at how we live now, and I think we've lost our everlovin' minds. Just my wife and myself...and we have three nice vehicles, a boat, three television sets hooked up to satellite, a freezer jam-packed with food out in the garage, a refrigerator in the kitchen---the door of which can barely contain all the food that's in it, cupboards overflowing, closets full of clothes, two fat dogs and a loudmouthed Siamese cat, four PCs and a Mac, high-speed internet, a killer streo system, two DVD players and a ton of DVD movies, hundreds of music CDs, two acres of land, a nice collection of sporting arms, fishing gear, etc., etc.

And at times I find myself wanting more electronic crap and gizmos, a newer pick-up...

And there are so many people in the world who would like to just eat every day.

Re: The "American Dream"

Most people don't have difficulty seperating comments on behavior or speech, ie: whining, making cynical comments, etc, and personal attacks like "you are. . . .".

Think about it.

How would you suggest a member be cautioned that he or she is out of line (again)? We don't really want to be deleting remarks all the time.

Re: The "American Dream"

dogsdad, We all should sit down and think about it sometime. Yes the government mark is probably not always correct, just like the last middle class tax break beginning at $110,000.

However, many do suffer. I personally know seniors who cut pills in half because they can't afford the medication. Lady in my office yesterday told me she did that as her monthly meds cost her $400.

Lady in next hospital bed to my Mom (Mom in rehab for breathing) in hospital because not taking medication correctly caused stroke, but probably for best as she told Mother she has no heat.

Mentally ill man seen sleeping in doorway in downtown this morning as usual although 23 degrees.

It goes on and on and this group is getting larger and larger. We must educate the youth and do whatever it takes to care for our seniors. And yes, I think it may be necessary to redistribute the wealth to do so.

JB In response to your opinion on name calling. Is not saying someone should take their whining elsewhere not calling them a whiner.

Who makes cynical remarks other than a cynical person.

No difference, except by interpretation such as a caution is the same as a threat. Oh well, do as you see fit.

it's not that you are a cynical whiner, it's just that no one wants to listen cynicism and whining.

You use the phrase "redistribute the wealth." We already "redistribute the wealth." It is done essentially by rewarding those who produce through the mechanics of a market economy. Perhaps you think the wealth should go to those who do not produce?

The bigger the safety net, the more willing people will be to fall into it. Down with socialism.

Ok. Latex Amphibian, could I just be a winer at least then I would think you considered me cultured. Oh yeah quit suckin' up to the big gun.

dogsdad, I fear what you say about the net is true and that is why I am a believer in stronger technical educations (job type) and extreme import taxes with agreements struck with industries to not abuse with increasing profits.

Q22, Guess just personal observation, I have no investigative knowledge or research to support my remark. Just seems to me would probably been a better comment on my part.

Re: The "American Dream"

dogsdad, I do question that we redistribute through those that produce. My great problem is with the management teams of publicly traded corporations. I believe they take more than they produce and thereby reduce the money paid to the "Risk Takers" (stock holders dividends). Money should be made by stock holders on divivdends and not stock value. Stock Value is not related to profit or Value of the Company ie Enron.

I see, whiner. Now I understand...stockholders have no power to dismiss management when they fail to run the corporations in such a way as to make a profit.

"Money should be made by stock holders on divivdends and not stock value. Re: The "American Dream"

I don't think so treedancer. I understand JB's comment on "personal attacks," but I would like to see it enforced across the board. Maybe that(whiner) is not a personal attack????

Maybe JB calling a female a broad on another thread is not a personal attack either.

JB, what exactly is a personal attack?

Bias sometimes happens. Afterall, we are human. I am as guilty of it as the next. Just don't act like you are above it please.

Re: The "American Dream"

Good people do bad things sometimes.

If you say, "You did a bad thing." you are addressing a specific event of behavior.

If you say, "You are a bad person." you are comitting a personal attack.

Calling a woman a broad is probably not PC, but does not label her as someone she isn't.

I am human, and I am offended by some remarks made by some members sometimes. I try hard to address my comments to the remarks that offended me, not to the person who made them. In my view, "Do not whine on the forum." addresses behavior, not the person.

Heard the joke about Pierre the baker?

Re: The "American Dream"

Understood, except for the "broad" part. When you called her a broad, didn't "broad" have meaning? I am not sure how it would be any different from calling someone a dumb--s? Both words have an intended meaning...right?
